Volunteering Information

Garden Volunteer

How do I start?
Just come along and speak to us for an informal chat. Just ask a staff member. We can sign you up there and then or you can come along for a taster and decide if being in the garden is for you. Alternatively you can fill out the volunteer form and send it to us at the address shown and we will be in touch.

Work Type
Community gardening: environment; DIY.

Frequency and commitment…
You decide how long you wish to volunteer for at each session. It is up to you. We have two days of dedicated volunteering time every Tuesday from 11am until 2pm or every Sunday from 1–4pm but there may be other times to volunteer — just ask.

Skills and experience needed?
You don't need any special skills, knowledge or experience, just an eagerness to help the project. However, if you think you do have a skill or would like to pass on any experience of garden related things, we welcome that too!

Age…
For adults there is no age limit. Children under 16 must come with an adult.

Accessibility
Disabled toilet
Wheelchair access

Keeping you Safe
New volunteers will receive an induction handbook that details Health and Safety procedures and any relevant information. You will be given basic guidance on tool use (depending on experience) and safety before you start any work in the garden. First aid kit is situated in the cabin and a first aider is on site. Sun cream is available for volunteers to use.

Requirements
We have some waterproof clothing but please provide your own if required. Please dress for the outdoors and wear suitable footwear.

Refreshments
Hot drinks and water are available for volunteers. (We do like to have a chat over a cuppa 😀 )

Events Assistants

What is an Events Assistant?
If gardening is not for you but feel you can be of help elsewhere for the community garden then perhaps an Events Assistant is more suited. You can assist with setting up/tidying up and/or organising refreshments and snacks when activities and workshops are taking place. Most take place on site; however, some events are out with the garden.

Frequency and commitment…
Girvan Community Garden has annual events, activities and workshops that will require Events Assistants. These will vary each year. On average we have about 6–8 of these throughout the calendar. You will be dealing with visitors, course participants and other volunteers. If you wish to become an Events Assistant we will sign you up as volunteer and will contact you before an event, activity or workshop to check if you can help.
